The Band

“A Musical History”

While much of The Band’s best leftovers found their way onto reissues of individual albums, this new boxed set–five CDs and a DVD–digs up a few more gems. Most of the best new tracks hearken to The Band’s roots as Ronnie Hawkins’ backing group or their tenure as Bob Dylan’s rock ‘n’ roll engine. The many song sketches featuring just one or two members are refreshing in their sparseness.

Best track: “Highway 61 Revisited” is a funky, loose version backing Dylan in 1974.
