Sonic Youth
“Goo: Deluxe Edition”
It’s clear Sonic Youth recorded “Goo” as a challenge to themselves: Could the once most outre of postpunk bands find a place in the mainstream? The answer was “sort of,” although the band’s signing to a major label did open the door for the likes of Nirvana. This new double-disc deluxe edition pairs the original “Goo” album with a host of demos and b-sides that probably indicate what the album may have sounded like before the band got a bigger budget.
Best track: The slightly rougher demo version of the group’s “Dirty Boots,” the closest Sonic Youth has come to an anthem.
