The American League champion White Sox, who have defied the odds all season, are in the unfamiliar position of wanting to live up to them.

Going into Monday’s fifth game of the National League Championship Series, the White Sox were favored by Las Vegas oddsmakers to win the World Series over either the Houston Astros or the St. Louis Cardinals.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants, advisers to most of Nevada’s licensed sports books (betting sites), made the Sox 6-5 favorites to win the Fall Classic, with the Astros at 2-1 and the Cards at 12-5.

That’s a far cry from the beginning of the season, when odds against the White Sox winning it all were 20-1. Even when the postseason began, they were 10-1 long shots.

They already have beaten the 5-1 odds against them winning the American League pennant when they squared off against the Red Sox two weeks ago.
