Illinois State tailback Brian Thompson and linebacker Kye Stewart were honored by the Gateway Conference for their performances in Saturday’s 61-35 victory over Southern Illinois, then the No. 1-ranked Division I-AA team.

Thompson, a transfer from Iowa State, netted 165 yards on 21 carries and scored four touchdowns against the Salukis to be named the Gateway’s offensive player of the week. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry against a defense that had allowed opponents an average of only 72.6 rushing yards per game.

Stewart, a sophomore from Nashville, was named the league’s defensive player of the week. He made a game-high 11 tackles, with one sack and another tackle for a loss. He ended SIU’s first possession by recovering a fumble, forced by Jesse Caesar, and returning it 19 yards to set up the game’s first score.
