Sexsmith & Kerr

Ron Sexsmith has never released a less-than-lovely record, but the Canadian songwriter’s recent attempts to broaden his audience haven’t rang quite as true as his earlier work. Sexsmith & Kerr is something of a back-to-basics set, an album sung and written entirely by Sexsmith yet also credited to longtime collaborator Don Kerr. The album consists of acoustic, stripped-down songs with lyrics that reflect his usual dance between darkness and light, yet it comes across as breezy and refreshing.
Best track: “I’ve Been Away,” a spare, simple song on a spare, simple record, all the better to relish the uncomplicated guitar and beautiful harmonies.
