Monday nights usually are so dead in clubland that they’re referred to as “musicians’ night off.” But last Monday, hundreds of music fans piled into Metro–along with five charged-up Chicago bands–to make the On the Town section’s “Rock and Rebuild” benefit for Hurricane Katrina victims a success.
Final tallies won’t be in for a bit, but it’s safe to say thousands of dollars were raised, thanks to healthy ticket sales and a silent auction of items from Bulls tickets to Orbitz airline tickets. A Squier Stratocaster guitar from Chicago Music Exchange, signed by all the acts, fetched more than $500.

The Redwalls, the Changes, the M’s, Bumpus, Abstract Giants and the Life During Wartime DJs all performed for free, and Metro owner Joe Shanahan donated his club for the evening to spur the cause. Likewise, Marty Lennartz of WXRT-FM 93.1 stayed until the very end as the evening’s host.
Thanks from On the Town to everyone who attended; all proceeds will go to the McCormick Tribune Foundation’s Hurricane Katrina Relief Campaign to support short- and long-term aid to those affected by the disaster.
