Mt. Prospect Village Board members have expressed support for a proposal that would bring ordinance violations before village hearing officers and bypass the Cook County courthouse in Rolling Meadows.

Though a vote on the proposal was not taken at a board meeting Tuesday night, proponents said the program would reduce the number of continuances and save time. The program would allow a maximum two-month continuance.

When an ordinance violation now comes before a judge, it can sometimes take a year to resolve, said Everette M. Hill Jr., a village attorney.

Under the proposal, hearing officers would deal with parking and non-moving traffic violations, nuisance complaints and property-maintenance and other code-enforcement violations.

Hill said the village files about 150 ordinance violations a year.

Park Ridge started a similar program in March. Hearing officers meet once a month for up to four hours, said Kathleen Henn, also a village attorney.
