Northwestern has received an oral commitment from Texas high school quarterback Joe Mauro. The Wildcats also have been recruiting Deerfield’s Alex Loukas, who said Northwestern is still among his top choices along with Purdue and Stanford.
Mauro of L.D. Bell High School in Bedford, Texas, near Dallas, visited Evanston Oct. 1-2. The 6-foot-4-inch, 200-pounder is running a spread offense similar to Northwestern’s. The Wildcats also received a commitment from wide receiver Sidney Stewart of Farmington, Mich.
Northwestern, which must replace Brett Basanez next season, has three quarterbacks returning: second-stringer and redshirt freshman C.J. Bacher; plus freshmen Mike Kafka from St. Rita and Andrew Brewer. . . .
LB Tim McGarigle was named national defensive player of the week for his 25 tackles in Saturday’s win over Wisconsin.
