The girls you see in movies and read about in books never seem to have trouble finding things to write about in their diaries. They spill their guts about boys, friends, sibs and school, writing for pages about the ups and downs of their lives.

But you, on the other hand, find yourself staring at a blank diary page with no clue how to begin. They make it look so easy–why do you have so much trouble getting started?

Here’s the push you need: American Girl’s “My Spin On Life Diary” (Pleasant Company Publications, $12.95). A spinner on the cover points you to a writing starter on the first page of the journal, so you never have to wonder, “What should I write about?”

If the spinner lands on the picture of a shooting star, you complete the sentence, “Tonight I hope I dream about …” If it lands on the magic wand, you write about where you’d go if you could be invisible.

Before long, you might realize that you don’t even need the writing prompts, and you’ll have pages and pages of memories to read and reread whenever you want.
