Arguments for and against the dismissal of the child pornography charges against R. Kelly will be heard Friday after a pretrial hearing for the singer/producer was postponed last week.
R. Kelly attended a pretrial hearing Friday during which both sides were expected to re-present arguments. Kelly’s attorney, Edward Genson, was to argue that 14 counts of child pornography against Kelly should be dismissed.
At previous hearings, Genson has argued that the 33-month period set forth by the prosecution is too broad a time frame for the making of a videotape that allegedly shows Kelly engaging in sex acts with an underage girl.
Already, the prosecution has cut 18 months off its original time frame of 51 months for the making of the videotape.
At the Friday hearing, the prosecution and defense met in Judge Vincent Gaughan’s chambers before the judge announced that both parties had agreed to reconvene the following Friday.
No reason for the postponement was given in court, but immediately after the hearing, Genson told reporters that there were problems getting expert witnesses to comply with orders. He declined to elaborate.
“Everything should be resolved by next week,” Genson said.
Kelly has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
