Four members of the Savall family plus the percussionist Estevan present an ambitious program that spans 1000 years and nearly a dozen cultures. Alongside such composers as Diego Ortiz, Marin Marais and Tarquinio Merula–long specialties of the performers–are several anonymous vocal and instrumental pieces plus improvisations by members of the ensemble. The aim, we are told, is “to build firm bridges” between Eastern and Western music, art and popular music, ancient and contemporary music, and different generations of performers. Not only is the concert one of the few that today succeeds with such ecumenicism, it also prompts return visits for the haunting vocalism of Figueras and the soulful string playing of Jordi Savall. A radiant disc, timeless in expression.
