Mayor Richard Daley regularly clashed with Jim Edgar when Edgar was governor, and the mayor’s scorn for him was apparent.

So, Daley’s response was surprising last week when a reporter, seeking a comment on the possibility of a new Edgar run for the governor’s mansion, pointed out that Daley had never been a fan.

“I was a fan of Jim Edgar’s,” Daley shot back. “Don’t say that. See, you put words in my mouth: `You’re not a fan of Jim Edgar.’ I was a fan. I worked with Jim Edgar. I may differ on issues, but I respect him. I respect his wife and his family.”

But a minute later, and without missing a beat, Daley was back to his old anti-Edgar form.

“He had a political position … that it was good to beat up Chicago,” the mayor declared.

Gov. Rod Blagojevich, by contrast, “has been good to the whole state,” Daley asserted.
