Northwestern freshman Tyrell Sutton came up just short of his third straight 100-yard game in Saturday night’s 52-21 loss at Arizona State, gaining 98 yards on 15 carries. He carried only three times for 18 yards in the first quarter as the Wildcats came out passing.
“We don’t go into a game, especially with the running game, thinking we have to get anyone so many touches,” coach Randy Walker said. “We want balance.”
Gerard Hamlett carried seven times for 61 yards as the No. 2 tailback. Brandon Roberson, who started the opener but injured his ankle, didn’t get a carry and may be slipping on the depth chart. “He’s not 100 percent,” Walker said. “He’s going to have to play better and practice better to get more of an opportunity.” . . .
Starting offensive tackle Dylan Thiry left the game with a sprained shoulder but is expected to be ready for Saturday’s game.
