As far as Evanston is concerned, it’s never too early to think Christmas.

The city is looking for a resident to donate a back-yard spruce or evergreen as the Christmas tree for a holiday display near Davis Street and Sherman Avenue.

But not just any tree will do. It should be at least 25 to 30 feet tall–the bigger the better–and it should have minimal bare spots, especially at the base.

“Ninety percent of the time, it’s a big evergreen that’s overgrown its space in somebody’s yard and they’re looking to get rid of it anyway,” said Paul D’Agostino, superintendent of the Parks/Forestry and Recreation Department. “This is a way to have it done for free.”

The forestry division will remove the tree at no cost, grind the stump and re-seed the area. The donor gets a letter from the city estimating the value of the tree, which can be used as a tax deduction.

The tree-lighting ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 22, so the tree must be removed by mid-November.
