The Elburn Village Board Monday approved two intergovernmental agreements with Metra about the size, design and funding for the village’s new train station.

Next month, Metra will start building a 400-square-foot depot with Prairie-style architecture, seating and wheelchair ramps. The building will not have a ticket window or restrooms, said Trustee Jeff Metcalf. Metra officials have suggested erecting a temporary shelter if the depot is not finished by the time commuter trains begin serving the village in late December, he said.

Metra is paying $165,000 of the building’s $404,000 cost. The remaining $239,000 will come from developer fees paid by B & B Development of St. Charles, which is building the Blackberry Creek subdivision that abuts the depot site on the east edge of Elburn. Once train service actually starts, officials hope a developer will propose a mixed-use expansion of the depot that could include retail and office space with adjoining homes.

Commuters will reach the train station on a road connecting it to Keslinger Road, while Metra coachyard workers will reach it on a smaller road from the north.
