Rodney Crowell
“The Outsider”
Rodney Crowell has been a country fixture for decades, beginning with his stint in Emmylou Harris’ band and continuing as a producer for Rosanne Cash and a hitmaker in his own right. Yet Crowell considers his most recent work his best, and hard as it may be to believe, Crowell’s probably right. On “The Outsider,” Crowell’s obviously angry and confused enough to get in your face. In a lot of ways, the album pays tribute to both the rock ‘n’ roll of Crowell’s Texas youth and the way his mind was changed when he discovered the Beatles and Bob Dylan. That Crowell has somehow refigured his sound to reference the two disparate influences says something about the man’s formidable talents.
