There’s no question that the double oak doors on Glenview’s north Metra station need to be repaired after being damaged by vandals–but for $12,000?

Trustee Philip White learned the sky-high price was because the exclusive vendor for the doors, New York-based Ellison Bronze Inc., has only one local distributor.

“I would think that for a cost of $12,000, some other avenues should be explored,” he said.

Vandals cracked the doors’ frame, ripped off the door handles and destroyed the high-tech automatic locking system.

Nine carpenters have looked at the doors. Only one firm is interested in the job, said Chris Clark, assistant public works director.
