Orange Juice

“The Glasgow School”

By playing up the fey vocals of singer Edwyn Collins and distinctively sideways arrangements, Scotland’s Orange Juice immediately set themselves apart from most other post-punk acts. Alas, Orange Juice’s records have never been released here before, and while the first album “You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever” is the best place to begin, this collection of early singles and “Ostrich Churchyard” serves almost as well. Being wimpy has never sounded so tough, and the group’s alternately jangly and tough guitars sound oddly contemporary after so many years mothballed away.

Best track: “Wan Light,” which provides the blueprint genesis for a generation of wimpy UK acts.
