Lake County Board member Angelo Kyle (D-Waukegan) may have come up with the best defense yet for the taxpayer-funded Hawaiian trip he and several other board members recently took.
“Studies show that in nice, serene, pleasant places, comfortable places, you’re usually more productive than in places of high stress and full of tension,” Kyle said. Lake’s board members joined about 3,000 other county officials from across the nation at the three-day conference of the National Association of Counties, where workshops centered on improving government services without raising taxes.
It cost an estimated $2,000 for each official to make the trip from the Chicago area.

Lake board member Michael Talbett (R-Lake Zurich) said the tab came out of his pocket. Pamela Newton (R-Vernon Hills) picked up much of the cost, saying she’d already spent most of the $5,000 the county gives her annually for expenses.
But Kyle, the association’s president, and the others said having the county foot the bill was justified. “It was non-stop work,” he said..
It’s unlikely the group’s next conference will receive the same type of negative reaction.
“We’re meeting right down the street in the City of Chicago,” Kyle said.
