Nineteen years after Texas’ Fabulous Thunderbirds smeared the dark-and-dirty R&B groove “Tuff Enuff” all over Top 40 radio, frontman Kim Wilson is still inclined to make exactly the same kind of music. Leading a version of the band that has been more or less intact since 1995–and which doesn’t include original guitarist Jimmie Vaughan–Wilson makes these ‘birds super-tight, notably on “Rock Candy,” a tough rewrite of “Tuff Enuff.” Sharing his vision is producer Steve Berlin, Los Lobos’ saxman, who, despite Wilson’s flimsy rumble of a voice, helps these ‘birds walk the blues on fast-paced, harp-driven anthems, such as the slinky “Feeling My Way Around” and Waylon Jennings’ “Only Daddy That’ll Walk the Line.”
