A frozen chicken that contained a wad of hidden cash was discovered missing on May 17 from the freezer of a 44-year-old woman, a report said.
The victim noticed that the chicken and money were missing from her home on the 5000 block of North Winthrop Avenue after a painter working there left for the day. The painter did not show up to complete the work after May 17, prompting the victim to file a police report on May 21.
KEY CATASTROPHE: A 54-year-old man watched as his vehicle was stolen May 17 while he was working on the 900 block of West Lawrence Avenue, a report said.
The victim was doing landscaping work when he saw an offender get into his pickup truck and drive off. The victim had left his keys on the front seat of the truck, the report said.
The truck was towing a white metal trailer with landscaping equipment when it was stolen.
NEAR MISS: A 35-year-old man was shot at when his business was held up at gunpoint on May 20, a report said.
The victim was at work on the 5000 block of North Sheridan Road when an offender entered the victim’s restaurant and walked behind the counter. The offender pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his money. The victim opened the cash register, and the offender took $500. The offender then searched the victim’s pants and took another $900.
While the offender was reaching into the victim’s pants, the victim tried to grab the offender’s gun. There was a struggle, and the victim received cuts on his hands.
The offender pushed the victim away, jumped over the counter and ran toward the front door. At the door, he fired one shot toward the victim and missed. He then fled.

WORK DISPUTE: A 33-year-old man was struck in the head with a brick on Tuesday by a co-worker who was angry that the victim had come to work late, a report said.
The victim arrived at his place of business in the 4000 block of North Francisco Avenue where the altercation ensued. After the victim and offender went outside of the facility to continue their argument, the offender picked up a brick and struck the victim on the left side of his head.
The victim received two small cuts and a large bump on his head. He was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital and admitted for 24-hour observation, the report said.
COLD BREW: A 30-year-old man driving a vehicle was struck with a beer bottle on May 22 after an altercation with a pedestrian, a report said.
The victim was driving on the 2000 block of West Lawrence Avenue when the altercation took place. The offender approached the vehicle’s passenger side window and threw a full beer bottle at the victim, which struck him in the face.
The victim refused medical attention at the scene, the report said.
