Jack Bauer’s next day is going to be a whole lot harder.
For a few minutes during the Monday finale of the Fox drama “24,” Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) appeared to be dead. But his “death” was all a plot to fool an evil government agent into thinking Bauer had been killed.
There were good reasons to fake Bauer’s death. As the season drew to a close, certain U.S. government factions wanted Bauer handed over to China for crimes he had committed while thwarting a terrorist plot, and other shady government types wanted him dead.
The fake death was just one more meaty twist in a consistently thrilling two-hour finale. Earlier, Bauer averted the death of a colleague, Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), before helping bring down a missile launched by terrorists.
Instead of getting thanks and maybe a vacation, Bauer ended his 24-hour day on the lam.
“You do understand — when you hang up, for all intents and purposes, Jack Bauer is dead,” said former President David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) in a final phone call to Bauer.
“I do understand that, sir. Mr. President, it’s been an honor,” Bauer replied, then took off for parts unknown.
