The village is structuring a workforce that reflects the community.
Police Chief Thomas Fleming recently attended a two-day seminar to gather ideas on the recruitment and selection of a diverse workforce.
“The idea is to have diversity in our village employees because it legitimizes our operation,” said Village Manager Tom Mick.
The village’s racial makeup is about 50 percent African-American and 50 percent white, he said.
But the ratio among village employees is not as balanced. Of the 38 officers in the Police Department, for example, six are African-American and two are Hispanic, according to Capt. Greg Baker.
The strategies recommended in the workshop should help officials improve that ratio, Mick said.

As jobs open in any village department, efforts will be made to attract male and female applicants from a full range of ethnic and racial backgrounds, Mick said.
