DuPage County Board Chairman Robert Schillerstrom and three board members got clearance last week from the board to attend this year’s National Association of Counties conference in Honolulu in July, but they’re flying on their own dime.

The county is picking up registration costs for the conference–$415 each–but Schillerstrom has requested that board members pay their own airfare.

“People are shying away because it’s a long way, it’s going to cost people more and Bob’s made it pretty clear he doesn’t want the county to pick up the expense for this,” said Commissioner Robert Heap, who said he is also paying for his own $215-a-night hotel room.

Commissioners William Maio and James Healy also will attend.

“If that plane goes down, there go the brains of the county,” Maio quipped as the measure was approved by the board’s Finance Committee.
