An Elmwood Park man who had been stabbed was found dead in his apartment Saturday morning, authorities said.

Elmwood Park police have not determined when Wayne Ebert, 22, was killed. No arrests had been made as of Saturday evening, said Police Chief Tom Braglia.

Ebert was pronounced dead at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Ebert’s roommate, whom police declined to identify, discovered Ebert’s body in his apartment in the 2300 block of North Harlem Avenue around 5:30 a.m., Braglia said. It was not clear how many times Ebert had been stabbed.

“We can’t give any more answers now,” Braglia said. “We are waiting. It’s under investigation.”

The homicide shocked many in the west suburb.

“This is a very quiet community,” Braglia said. “This is very unusual.”

The last homicide in Elmwood Park was in March 2000, when a cabdriver was shot to death.

The crime stunned Ebert’s neighbors, who said police were swarming the building most of the morning.

“I’m scared. I’m shaking,” said resident Dottie Pucek, 42. “Nothing like this has ever happened.”

Pucek said she was awakened by someone screaming threats outside the apartment building around 4 a.m. She said most of the residents in the building know each other and get along well.

“We’re all very close-knit here,” she said. “Most of the people have been living here forever.”
