British Sea Power
Open Season
British Sea Power’s first album had enough majesty, mystery and outright clamor that–combined with the band’s rapidly growing reputation as a live act–indicated even better things to come. That better thing is album No. 2, “Open Season,” a disc that adds to the equation an even better grasp of melody and a modicum of economy. It also adds heaps of new wave hooks, one result being that the band comes out of the starting gate with “It Ended on an Oily Stage” sounding just like the Psychedelic Furs at their most discordant and disaffected. That’s fine, though, since British Sea Power keeps it up, cruising through song after song of pop perfection like “Please Stand Up” and “To Get To Sleep” that makes the two-year wait between records worth it.

Best track: “It Ended on an Oily Stage,” which proves that a band can go pop without losing much of its power.
