Gioiosa, who joined the department in 1979, was appointed acting chief in July after the retirement of Paul Wasik.
Village President Melvin Van Allen said no other candidates were interviewed for the job. Van Allen said he waited until after the April 5 election to make the appointment in case a new village president was elected and wanted to appoint someone else.
“I knew who I wanted,” said Van Allen, who won re-election.
Gioiosa will be paid $75,000 annually.
Also this week, the board appointed former Village Trustee Donald Slapelis to the post of treasurer. Slapelis will be paid $600 a month for the part-time position.
