Richmond’s Jerry Wainwright, the leading candidate to be named DePaul’s new basketball coach, met early Monday night with Blue Demons athletic director Jean Lenti Ponsetto.
He was expected to return on a private plane to Richmond, Va., where he is scheduled to appear Tuesday at a charity golf tournament.
Wainwright is the second known candidate to be interviewed by Ponsetto.

On Sunday, Ponsetto spoke with Western Michigan coach Steve Hawkins.
But Wainwright emerged late last week as the favorite to replace Dave Leitao and is expected to be officially introduced as DePaul’s new coach later this week.
The 58-year-old Wainwright grew up in Berwyn and coached at both East Leyden and Highland Park High Schools.
Richmond athletic director Jim Miller acknowledged he may lose Wainwright to the Demons.
“In that coach Wainwright has decided to talk to DePaul about their opening, that obviously puts us in a position where we need to consider what the possible alternatives are,” he told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “Whatever happens in Chicago, we need to be prepared to respond appropriately.”
