Rising temperatures and chirping birds mean just one thing: Portapotty season.

Hold your nose. And, all too often, your bladder.

But if state Rep. Renee Kosel has her way, this is the year when Illinois residents who take to the outdoors will no longer have to put up with the filth or force themselves to hold it until a less pungent option can be found.

Kosel, a New Lenox Republican, has introduced legislation that would mandate cleanliness for portable toilets throughout Illinois. The House has approved the measure, and it is awaiting a vote in the Senate.

The bill would require that all units be thoroughly scrubbed each time they’re pumped out; that toilet paper, paper towel and anti-bacterial soap dispensers be refilled; and that the units be inspected after each cleaning to make sure they are up to snuff.
