The fourth compilation of songs from the soundtrack of “The O.C.” was released April 5, and plans are already in motion for a fifth.

Why the rush? That’s easy: “Music from ‘The O.C.’: Mix 4” has risen as high as No. 4 on the iTunes album-download chart, and worldwide sales of all four “O.C.” compilations should reach the 1 million mark within the next three weeks, according to Warner Bros. Records.

Alexandra Patsavas, music supervisor of “The O.C.” (and a Glenbard South grad), has a theory as to why music featured on TV shows has had such success in recent years. “I feel like bands are really open to TV and [on TV], they are reaching an audience in a way that radio doesn’t,” Patsavas said.

And though the “O.C.” soundtracks are heavy on newer artists such as Pinback and Modest Mouse, a Beck track appears on the fourth “O.C.” CD, and U2 and the Beastie Boys have allowed their music to be used on the show.

“Some bands and songs present themselves as being wildly appropriate for the show, and sometimes those bands and songs are not what people expect from us–we’ve used Whitesnake, Bob Seger and Journey,” Patsavas notes.
