Lifetime is dipping a toe into the limited-series waters, ordering up a six-hour show called “Beach Girls” for summer.

Based on the novel by Luanne Rice, “Beach Girls” follows the lives of three teenagers who spend the summer in an idyllic beach town and become friends. Life, however, intervenes down the line, and the women grow apart until a tragedy brings them back together.

Casting is under way.

“Beach Girls” marks Lifetime’s first foray into limited series, but the network has other such projects in development too. “Human Trafficking,” a four-hour mini-series about the international sex trade to star Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite”) and Donald Sutherland (“M*A*S*H,” “Salem’s Lot”), is targeted for an October premiere.

In addition to the mini-series projects, Lifetime also has ordered new seasons of its dramas “Missing” and “Strong Medicine.”
