Even the most unstylish of guys have found that they can jazz up a mundane look by wearing a colored undershirt or colored T-shirt under a button shirt. And, of course, a T-shirt by itself doesn’t look half-bad, now that considerable design effort is going into some of these babies.

Jeff Worth, co-owner of His Stuff men’s store at 5314 N. Clark St., has some suggestions, however, on how to pull it all off.

“This season, bright colors are really big,” Worth said. “So you wear a bright color under a more neutral shirt. Maybe button the shirt one less button than you normally would. A big trend right now is a light V-neck sweater and a colored T under the V-neck to get that little peek of color.”

The fit is important especially when wearing the T-shirt by itself. “You don’t want to do `sausaging’ where you’re squeezed into something,” he said. “Even if you have a great body, it looks bad, like you’re trying too hard.”

Too, watch out for what Worth calls the “pajama” look, when the T-shirt is big enough to fit over a farm silo.

He explained that the fit will vary from company to company, so bop into a store, find your size in various brands and try them all on. For example, European lines are cut a little trimmer. Once you find a brand that suits your frame best, always keep an eye out for that brand first. As Worth explained, “Fit, in your wardrobe overall, is the key to looking good.”
