Each time Barry Zito strikes out a batter, many people benefit. Zito has founded Strikeouts for Troops, a program for wounded U.S. soldiers across the world, including Iraq and Afghani-stan. Zito is donating $100 per strikeout, and other players plan to join the cause. “It’s so overlooked, what the troops are doing for us and what they’ve always done for us,” Zito said. “People support Americans . . . regardless of what side they’re on politically. We can make a little sacrifice or a little donation or whatever we can do to help them. They’re making the ultimate sacrifice for us.” Zito’s Web site (www.strikeoutsfortroops.org) will track his strikeout totals. It also accepts donations from anyone, athlete or not.
