For the first time in its nine-year history, “The Daily Show” is releasing a DVD.

The June 28 release will be a three-disc compilation of the show’s hilarious “Indecision 2004” election coverage.

Most election-season coverage doesn’t really stand the test of time, but the political skewering of “The Daily Show” fare should hold up nicely to repeat viewing. Rob Corddry and “senior political analyst” Stephen Colbert performed brilliant sendups of pompous network news correspondents, and one segment, in which Stewart compared the prescream and postscream Howard Dean to Smeagol and Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings,” still makes me laugh.

Speaking of laughter, there wasn’t a lot of it for Stewart after his notorious appearance on “Crossfire” a few weeks before the presidential election.

“Crossfire” is going to be phased out in the coming months, according to CNN president Jonathan Klein, and even Klein credits Stewart’s Oct. 15 appearance, in which he told hosts Tucker Carlson and Paul Begala that the program was “hurting America,” with helping to kill the CNN shoutfest. In the first of his two stand-up appearances at the Rosemont Theatre on Friday, Stewart said that the “Crossfire” appearance “hurt his heart” and put him into a “shame spiral.”

The ultimate lesson of his “Crossfire” appearance, he noted, was “never do TV when you’re really tired.”
