Officials are looking into adopting an ordinance that would ban pellet guns and replicas.
The Village Board’s Police Committee this week approved a recommendation to amend village code that would toughen laws governing the sale and possession of such guns within the village.
Noting that police recently have confiscated more than a dozen such guns and that a Sandburg High School student was suspended for a year for bringing a pellet gun to school, officials said Orland Park needs stronger laws.
“If one of these gun is pointed at a citizen or police officer, they may respond with deadly force, thinking it is the real thing,” Police Chief Tim McCarthy said.
“There are little to no regulations. Children can go in and purchase this type of item. There is no background check process like the ones for firearms. There are nothing on these,” McCarthy added.
The Village Board has yet to take up the issue.
