Beck

Guero

Pity poor Beck Hansen, torn between making cartoon music for kids and releasing more mature material for grown-ups. Beck’s last two stabs at the latter, “Mutations” and “Sea Change,” may have been boring, but they were also among the best things he’s done to date. “Guero,” on the other hand, tries to have it both ways, stuffing both sides of Beck’s musical personality onto one disc, and the result is uneven and disjointed. As someone who’s always had a problem with sincerity, Beck sounds as unconvincing getting down and funky with his bad self on songs such as “E-Pro” and “Black Tambourine” as he does on the contemporary dust bowl death blues trilogy of “Farewell Ride,” “Rental Car” and “Emergency Exit” that end the album.

Best track: “Earthquake Weather,” a slow-burn summer groove that makes good use of Beck’s falsetto and the Dust Brothers’ percussive scratching.
