In past years, I served as a member of the board of directors of both the Tribune Co. and Aon.
The Tribune’s front-page headline on March 5 was “Aon CEO part of scheme.”

The same edition of the Tribune Business section accurately reported, “Until [New York Atty. Gen. Eliot] Spitzer launched his legal attack, contingent commissions were a standard, publicly disclosed element in the insurance brokerage business.”
A “standard, publicly disclosed element in the insurance brokerage business” is no scheme. Aon and its competitors did business in this “standard, publicly disclosed” manner for years. Reporting allegations as facts is a highly unusual departure from the Tribune’s high standards.
