Mired in fourth place for the season in the 18-to-49 demographic, NBC isn’t about to let go of its highest-rated show any time soon. The network is reportedly close to a deal to extend “ER” through the 2007-08 season.

NBC already had the Warner Bros. TV-produced medical drama under contract through the end of the 2005-06 season, but a two-season extension is likely, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“ER,” currently in its 11th season, is NBC’s most watched show, averaging nearly 16.5 million viewers per episode in its tough time period against CBS’ “Without a Trace.” “ER” also is tied with the second season of “The Apprentice” for NBC’s top show in the 18-to-49 demographic, drawing a 7.8 rating.
