Trustees last week unanimously passed a 5 percent hotel tax designed to boost the village’s revenues and make it more attractive as a tourist destination.
Worth is among several south suburbs that have imposed a special tax on hotel accommodations to generate money to market or enhance their image and to lend higher visibility to the hotels, said Jim Garrett, president of the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The village would receive 4 percent of the tax with the remaining 1 percent going to the Southland visitors bureau, officials said. Garrett said the bureau puts the money toward a matching grant from the state, which is available to convention and visitors bureaus.
The tax takes effect April 7 and officials are uncertain how much revenue it will generate, Village President Edward Guzdziol said.
