“Get out of the house. There are a lot of opportunities that people won’t go after because they feel they’re not prepared or have been rejected. I think half the battle is showing up, getting in the game and working hard to prove who you are.”
–John Plunkett, founder of the non-profit organization Harborquest, which for 35 years has helped people train for and find jobs, gave Q his best advice for people who are looking for work.
Plunkett, who’s in his early 60s, is proud of Harborquest’s success.
“We’ve gotten over 15,000 people into long-term employment. Some of the people we work with are the recently homeless, ex-offenders and single moms,” he said. “We train them and give them recent work experience so they’ll have a solid work record and can move into full-time work.”
And what keeps him motivated?
“This job is the best deal in town,” he said. “I have a lot of friends who get up and go to jobs . . . where they don’t see the value in what they’re doing. I feel privileged to have been able to earn a living and support a family by improving opportunities for other people.”
