The village hired the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police this week to help find a replacement for Walter “Butch” Kaszubski, who is retiring as chief after more than four years on the job.

Kaszubski commands a force of 32 full-time officers and has seen the number of calls to the department jump to 17,000 in 2004 from 8,700 four years ago.

With the continual growth of the town, the construction of Interstate Highway 355 and the increase in business and retail, Kaszubski said it is the right time for him to leave to let a new chief start his or her own programs.

“It is the perfect time for someone to lay the foundations for the department to address these issues,” he said.

Kaszubski, the former deputy chief in Orland Park, joined the department in December 2000. He will leave his job at the end of March after 34 years in law enforcement.

The search for his replacement through the Chiefs Association Executive Search and Assessment Center will cost $8,000, said Village Administrator Russ Loebe.
