Developers will have to give up more land after the Village Board voted this week to add additional space for the parks donation requirement.

The board approved a measure that will increase the donation from 7.5 to 10 acres per 1,000 acres of development.

“In some cases the Park District will be forced to take cash in lieu [of land], but it must show that it will benefit the neighborhood,” said village Administrator Terry Burghard.

Park District President Michelle Kelly said surrounding municipalities are also increasing the donation requirement. Oswego, Naperville and Yorkville are already at 10 acres; however, Joliet still requires 7.5 acres, she said.

“The 10 is going to look at a very large impact on the next 10 years. We are constantly working towards [open space],” Kelly said.
