“Good diet and exercise give you a feeling no drug, no pill, nothing else can give you.”
–Michael Richards of Elk Grove Village told Q about how he won a lifelong battle against obesity. Richards, 26, dropped 130 pounds from his 320-pound frame in a year by starting cardio and weight workouts and eating smaller, healthy meals. He was so excited by the changes that he became a personal trainer at World Gym in Palatine.

“My experience is what I use to motivate clients,” he said. “Knowing how lazy I was, and how out of shape, I tell them if I can do it, anybody can.”
Richards started losing weight in 2001 with a New Year’s resolution. What gave him the ultimate nudge? The previous summer “me and my girlfriend were at Great America. We had waited two to three hours to get on a ride, and when we went to get on, I was too big for the support to close.”
For those who think a diet means saying so long to anything scrumptious, take it from Richards: “Six days a week, I watch my diet strictly, eat small meals and stay away from sugar. Then one day out of the week, I’ll go to town, having beers, pizza, whatever. It works.”
