James Willey is running unopposed for his third term as Elburn village president–but he doesn’t assume it will stay that way until Election Day.
“It only takes about 50 signatures on a petition to get on the ballot in a town this size,” Willey commented. “Somebody could decide to run Monday morning and have everything in place by Wednesday morning.”
The 51-year-old local dentist said he has four ongoing projects he wants to see finished over the next four years. The first on his list is to open the Metra passenger station being built just east of downtown, which is scheduled to open in early 2007.
The second is to persuade the federal government to make Elburn a quiet zone in which trains won’t be allowed to sound their horns except in emergencies.
The third project is building an overpass over Anderson Road east of downtown so that commuters who live north of the Union Pacific railroad tracks will be able to reach the Metra station.

Willey also wants to put the village’s new radium-filtering water treatment system in place without selling bonds to pay for it.
In another matter, the Village Board is poised to dive into plans for a municipal swimming pool–but residents shouldn’t break out their swim fins just yet, warned Willey.
“All we’re doing is looking at a feasibility study. We’re not promising a pool will open next year or even the year after that,” Willey said.
Board members expect to vote Monday whether to pay consulting firm Burbach Aquatics $2,000 to conduct the study.
