WHO’S HOT
CHEF SHAWN MCCLAIN
GREEN ZEBRA’S GUY IS NO ORDINARY VEGETABLE MAN
Tiny, successive vegetable courses render some diners anxious, but vegetable-friendly haute cuisine works for Shawn McClain. The 37-year-old chef has sprung from the vaunted charms of Spring to the ripe pleasures of Green Zebra, a restaurant named after a rarefied tomato. His clever avocado panna cotta and soothing avocado-green space impress. “He’s making us cow-devouring Midwesterners use ‘cool’ and ‘vegetarian’ in the same sentence,” says Tribune restaurant critic Phil Vettel. Table-hopping Emily Nunn calls his approach refreshingly “not earnest.” The New York Times heralds him, breathlessly, as the talent behind “what amounts to four-star vegetarian food.” All of which makes McClain as hot as a cave-aged gruyere cheese souffle with endive, verjus and Seedling Orchard apricots. “It’s great to be hot,” says McClain, earnestly. “We are hoping to build a restaurant that sustains and isn’t just the restaurant of the moment.” We’re glad to know spinach sustains respect. And that the menu includes braised chicken.

MARC NEWSON
HOT DESIGNER
Marc Newson, the London-based, Australian-born, internationally heralded product designer, is generally regarded as the current big thing by anyone in the shelter industry. With furniture, lighting, glassware, household objects, luggage, a mobile phone, restaurant interiors and even a jet to his credit, and examples of his work in the permanent collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art, London’s Design Museum, Basel’s Vitra Design Museum and the MusZe National d’Art Moderne-Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, he has been astonishingly prolific, and he just turned 40. “Everybody still goes, ‘Who?,’ when his name comes up, and I mean people in the design and fashion industry,” says Obi Nwazota, the Chicago architect-turned-retailer who has brought the city edgy emporiums such as Orange Skin for home furnishings (where Newson’s designs for Alessi, Flos and Magis are sold). Newson is about to become a household name with his latest project: the Nike Zvezdochka. These playful, bright shoes look like plastic riddled with holes, but actually are engineering wonders designed as multi-purpose shoes for cosmonauts (Zvezdochka was the Russian dog who went into space on Sputnik 10 in 1961). We’re hoping they make our earth-bound feet feel weightless.
