A mistake made last spring by the Kane County clerk’s office will lower homeowners’ property taxes next year, the Batavia City Council learned this week.

Last year the county collected $309,044 more for Batavia than it should have, raising individual tax bills by an average of about $50, said Finance Director Peggy Colby. This year county officials are taking that money back out of the tax levy the city approved Monday, which will lower tax bills by the same amount they were improperly raised in 2004.
