T.I.
Urban Legend
T.I.’s 2001 debut “I’m Serious” wasn’t taken that way, even though it deserved to be. He followed it two years later with the even better “Trap Muzik.” But it, too, went largely unappreciated at first. Then T.I. found himself locked up for a probation violation on a felony drug conviction. And in the curious world of hip-hop, a criminal record sometimes brings you a certain credibility. During his jail stint, people outside Atlanta started paying attention to the self-anointed King of the South. T.I.’s single, “Let’s Get Away,” moved into heavy rotation. Now a free man, T.I. is in the spotlight as never before. And he returns with an often riveting treat for the ears. He isn’t an Atlanta sensation that will win over the mainstream as OutKast did; nor is he a novelty like Lil Jon. He is a wicked, crafty lyricist who deserved Vibe magazine’s recent nod for best street anthem. And on “Urban Legend,” he’s reloaded with many, many more.
