New York advertising copywriter Justin Racz has done a tremendous service to us all with “50 Jobs Worse Than Yours” (Bloomsbury, $14.95), a work probably best kept on your job site for bad days.
The jobs include rat catcher in India; telemarketing script writer (never start with, “Am I catching you at a bad time?”; maggot wrangler for movie corpses, paying $37 to $40 an hour; and ratemyvomit.com photo editor, which isn’t paying anything until some advertisers sign on. (Perhaps a tarp manufacturer?)
A couple of entries were particularly amusing:
– For a cell phone salesman wearing an inflatable phone outside a store, the danger is this: “Being approached by a child and getting punched in the zero.”
– For a shopping cart valet, there is this job benefit: “Sometimes get to drive the golf cart when it’s rigged. With 25 cars and you’re cruising at 5 m.p.h., there’s nothing like bringing in a herd.”
