Sixth-ranked Utah would be happy to play in the Fiesta Bowl.
But one thing the Utes don’t want is a four-way tie for the Big East championship.
In that scenario, Syracuse–yes, Syracuse–would go to the Fiesta Bowl. The Orange is 5-5 and would possibly be the worst Bowl Championship Series team in history, with a 51-0 loss to Purdue on its resume.
How would the Orange win the Big East? If Boston College beats Temple on Saturday–which is probable–and Pittsburgh beats visiting West Virginia on Thanksgiving–which is a real possibility–then Syracuse needs to upset BC to claim its BCS prize.
Syracuse would win the tiebreaker because it would have the best head-to-head record among the four schools.
That means Orange coach Paul Pasqualoni faces the possibility of getting fired or going to the Fiesta Bowl as his end-of-season options.
It also could lead to Utah losing some votes in the final Top 25 polls, even if it wins the Fiesta Bowl, because Syracuse would be perceived to be such a weak opponent.
