Summer in Abaddon

Lacking the sense of experimentation and adventure found on their “Offcell” EP, Pinback’s “Summer in Abaddon” is a perplexingly digestible flood of somewhat quirkless rock. This is not to say they’ve taken a turn for the worse. In fact, this album’s serene rumble is just in time to be the soundtrack for the chilly, gray days ahead. Replacing the comforting and engaging 10-minute pieces are choppy, vibrating guitar parts with lingering melodies and less zealous vocal interplay. But the defining weaving instruments and mellow overtones remain, and Pinback has proven they can do more than replicate their past success.
